What are all these age spots and brown spots on my skin? Pigmentation is an area of the skin that appears darker than surrounding tissues. It has many sources, can appear anywhere on the body and will vary in size, shape, and number. Types of pigmented lesions include birthmarks, freckles, hyperpigmentation due to trauma and age spots. While sun is the first culprit, genetics, some medications and the natural aging process can cause pigmentation to occur as well. The most common type of pigment concern is age spots. Age spots appear most often on areas of the skin most exposed to the sun, such as the neck, face and hands and treatment options are available to treat the condition. How Do I Treat This? There are many over the counter solutions available, however, these are often costly and not very effective. Depending on your age, skin type, and a variety of other factors, laser and energy-based solutions often provide the best outcomes. Laser energy targets the pigment and breaks it up and the body removes the debris naturally, the amount of pigment will determine how many treatments are required. Treatment of darker skinned patients may be contraindicated due to the risk of hypopigmentation (lighter spots on skin). An assessment will be made at your consultation. What else do I need to know? A consultation is always advised before beginning this treatment and a series of sessions is usually required to give the optimal result. Individuals receiving treatment should wear sunblock if going in the sun and avoid sun exposure which can re-trigger pigmentation. Your consultant can assist you in choosing a safe and effective block that is easy to wear, the better care you take of your skin after treatment, the longer your results will last. We strongly encourage maintenance treatments, usually one every 4-6 months to achieve the most effective results.
